3/4/18 – The Supremacy of Jesus in Evangelism – How the Glory of God Shapes the Evangelistic Mission of The Church

1 Corinthians 9:19-23 ESV

19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

I.CONTEXTUALIZING THE GOSPEL FOR THE SAKE OF ALL
A.Paul had modeled for them what it meant to forgo your rights in Christ for the sake of others.
B.Contextualizing the Gospel is not the same thing as changing the Gospel.
C.We contextualize to bring clarity to the Gospel for the unbeliever.

II.RELATIONAL EVANGELISM FOR THE SAKE OF ONE
A.Relational Evangelism is about meeting people where they are and genuinely being their friend.
B.A quick warning: If you befriend lost people, you will find yourself in some morally precarious situations.
C.In the morally neutral: Pass when necessary to help other Christians. Partake when necessary to help others become Christians.

III.3 Warnings on Being All Things to All People:
1.Don’t compromise your personal convictions in the name of trying to win a person to Jesus.
2.Don’t participate in sin in the name of winning lost people to a holy God and His sinless, Savior Son.
3.Don’t let the friendship become more important than the evangelism.

IV. MISSIONS FOR THE SAKE OF THE GLORY OF GOD
A.We do missions, first and foremost for the sake of the glory of God not the good of man.
B.Missions are not ultimate because man is not ultimate. Worship is ultimate because God is ultimate.
C.God is on a mission to magnify His glory, which is most clearly seen in God choosing to extend mercy to sinners.
D.For our evangelistic enterprise to last, it must also be fueled by a desire for the glory of God to be seen and known in all the earth.

NEXT STEPS
1.Love people by loving God first rather than trying to love God by loving people first. (Matthew 22:34-40)
