Galatians 5:16-25 ESV
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
I.THIS IS HOW WE ROLL (16-18)
A.Walking by the Spirit means following the lead of the Spirit.
B.Walking by the Spirit means having to make that choice daily.
C.Walking by the Spirit means waging and winning the war on our sin nature.
D.Walking by the Spirit does not mean hiding from the world.
E.Walking by the Spirit is the ultimate proof of having been set free from sin and the good works Gospel.
II.WE SEE YOU (19-21)
A.Walking by the Spirit is obvious. So, is not walking by the Spirit.
B.4 Common Types of Sin: Sexual Sin (19), Idolatry (20), Relational Sin (20), Over Indulgence (21)
C.Practicing the flesh and not walking by the Spirit means no inheritance in the Kingdom of God.
III.FALREAL FRUIT OF FREEDOM (22-23)
A.Fruit of the Spirit flows from walking by the Spirit and not from self-effort.
B.Fruit of the Spirit is not about having a checklist but becoming Christ like.
C.3 Branches of Fruit (22-23):
1.Love, Joy, and Peace
2.Patience, Kindness, and Goodness
3.Faith, Gentleness, Self-Control
NEXT STEPS (24-25)
1.We can win the war against the flesh because we belong to Jesus and our flesh has already been put to death. (24)
2.We can win the war against the flesh because we are being taught how to walk with by the Spirit. (25)
