1 Peter 3:7 ESV
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
I. LEADING BY SERVING
A. Husbands are God’s leaders in the home but that role will require them to serve their wives, not demand from them.
B. Men lead like Jesus, who was original servant leader.
II. I’M NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU
A. Men have inherited a strong sense of inadequacy from Adam and abuse their role as leader to cover their insecurities.
B. A man’s greatest fear is that he is not enough. His greatest need is the respect of those he loves.
III. IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S HER
A. Women inherited a mistrust of men from Eve making the struggle to submit her problem, not her husbands.
IV. THE WRONG SOLUTION
A. Beating your husband up will not fix it. Being overly sensitive as a husband will not fix it.
B. Using wife’s submission to gauge your manhood is not the solution.
V. THE RIGHT PRESCRIPTION
A. Find your worth in the unchanging totally satisfactory work of Jesus on your behalf.
B. In the doctrine of imputation, Jesus takes our shame on Himself and gives us His perfection.
VI. LEADING LIKE JESUS
A. Men lead like Jesus by treating their wives like queens.
B. Men lead like Jesus by trying to out submit their wives.
APPLICATION
1. Treat and love your wife well & you set up your kid’s marriages for success, too.
2. Treat your wife as the precious creature she is.
3. Treat your wife as your equal b/c in the kingdom, she is an equal inheritor of grace.
4. Treat your wife well and you will increase your intimacy with her and God, making your life more pleasurable.
