8/23/15 – Jesus Sends Part 2

Matthew 28:16-20 ESV

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

I. THE COMMAND TO MAKE DISCIPLES
A. Jesus sends us to make disciples, not Christians.

II. DISCIPLESHIP AND PARENTING
A. Getting into a discipleship relationship with someone is a lot like being their spiritual parent.
B. Because we all have parental instincts, we all have discipleship instincts.
C. Just like with parenting, in discipleship there is no one size fits all method.
D. If our kids are to turn out well it will be because of the grace of God. Same in discipleship.

III. THOUGHTS ON DISCIPLESHIP
A. Discipleship is caught as much as it is taught.
B. Discipleship is for everybody & not just the experts.
C. Discipleship can begin even before a person is a follower of Jesus.

IV. CORE VALUE OF MULTIPLICATION
A. The end goal of discipleship is that we raise disciples who in turn raise up their own disciples.
B. Multiplication is the way God intended the church to grow.

V. DISCIPLESHIP AND COMMUNITY
A. Discipleship happens best in community because we were never meant to walk alone, but together.
