15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Exodus 20:15-16 ESV
I. The Sin of Stealing
A. We are born as bandits and bad guys.
B. To steal is a sin against God first and foremost. (Psalm 51:3-4)
C. When we steal, we fail to trust God’s provision for us. We also sin when we become stingy & fail to share with others what God has provided us. (Acts 2:42-47, 2 Cor 8:13-16, Matt 6:19-21)
II. The Loathsomeness of Lying
A. Lying is not telling the truth about someone, or telling the truth needlessly about someone to do damage to them for personal gain.
B. Lying for the sake of your neighbor is biblically just as bad as lying to injure your neighbor, as a general rule.
III. Fighting for What Sets Us Free
A. To be strong witnesses for Christ requires us to stand up and speak up for the truth.
B. True love, like the love of God for us in Christ, is rooted in the truth. (Romans 5:1-8)
NEXT STEPS:
- The most recurring lie we tell is to ourselves- that we are ok “without God or with God,” if that matters to us.
- The world’s oldest lie is Satan telling us God is not good and, if we want to be happy, we must liberate ourselves from Him. (Genesis 3:1-5)
- THE TRUTH: Only when we deny the lie of Satan and believe the Lord Jesus can we find what will liberate us and lead us to freedom. (John 8:31-47)
