Exodus 20:12 ESV
”Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
I. The Fully Functioning Family is Foundational
A. The way to destroy a nation is to destroy the family.
B. The way to destroy a family, and therefore a nation, is disobedient kids. (2 Timothy 3:1-2)
II. Our Nearest Neighbor
A. The second part of the law deals with loving our neighbor and our nearest neighbor is our family. (Matthew 22:34-40)
B. The rule of categories means the 5th commandment extends beyond just parents to all authority figures. (1 Samuel 24:9-11, 2 Kings 2:9-12)
III. Honor is Heavy
A. Parents are to be given their due, due to the weightiness of their position.
B. Parents are to be given their due, due to the weightiness of the promise. (Ephesians 6:1-2)
NEXT STEPS:
- Parents are owed a lifetime of respect and kids are owed a lifelong example to follow.
- God meets the need created by our disobedience of Him as our Father through the perfect obedience of God the Son.
