01/06/19 – Respect and Responsibility Loving Our FaMily, Leading Our FaMily, and Refusing to use the Lame Excuse of Family

18And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace. 19And the Lord said unto Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which sought thy life. 20And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand. 21And the Lord said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. 22And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: 23And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn. 24And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and sought to kill him. 25Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me. 26So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.

I. RESPECTING AND LOVING YOUR FAMILY
A. Moses feels a deep respect for Jethro. The kind a son feels for a father & does the right thing by talking to him about his plans.
B. We must respect our families but always obey our Father in Heaven ahead of them. (Luke 14:25-26)
C. Christian parents need to respect kids enough to support the dreams God has for them.

II. RESPONSIBILITY TO LEAD YOUR FAMILY
A. Leading God’s family successfully requires we love our own families sacrificially.
B. As parents,we must work to see our children’s hearts captured with the Gospel, not just their bodies corralled with good behavior.
C. As parents,we must teach our kids to rest in God’s love, not just obey God’s Law.
D. We use fear to coerce & correct behavior. God uses unconditional & sacrificial love to corral and capture our hearts.

III. TALKING ABOUT GOD WITH OUR FAMILY
A. We are responsible to tell our kids who God is and that He wants a relationship with them.
B. Tips for talking with kids about Jesus:
1. They are paying attention, even when they are not paying attention.
2. Have fun and let them have fun.
3. They’re kids, not Freddy Kruger.
4. Seize teachable moments.
5. Teach them to pray.
6. Focus on the Word.
7. They only need to know what they need to know.
8. Teach Love over Law.
9. Point them to Jesus.
10. Trust God with the rest.

IV. MOMS CAN LEAD, TOO
A. Mothers have a role to play in leading spiritually in the home, too.
B. God has routinely through history used godly mothers to shape the men whom He would use to shape the world.

V. THE LAME EXCUSE OF FAMILY
A. Family cannot be used an excuse to disobey the Great Commission.
B. We are to love our families first, and trust God that there will be plenty of us left over for everyone else. (Matthew 15:21-28)
