1 Corinthians 16:1-4 ESV
1 Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. 2 On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come. 3 And when I arrive, I will send those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem. 4 If it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany me.
I.THE MISSION OF GOD, THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH
A.God is on a mission to be known and to gather a people to worship Jesus forever.
B.The church has a mission to be uniquely used by God in its community in Him accomplishing His mission.
II.FUNDING THE MISSION BY FUNDING THE CHURCH
A.The Corinthians were to care for the poor to tell the world what Jesus is like.
B.When we give to the church, we actually give to the mission of making God known.
C.If the church does not fund the mission, no one else will.
III.GIVING AND RECEIVING REGULARLY
A.The church is to collect financial gifts each time it gathers.
B.Christians are to be cultivate the holy habit of generosity by giving systematically (each time they get paid.)
C.The church does not take up an offering. It receives it.
IV.FREELY AND PROPORTIONATELY
A.What is given should be proportionate to one’s income and sacrificial in nature.
B.Giving is an opportunity not an obligation.
