Matthew 9:35-38 ESV
35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
I.A FALSE ASSUMPTION
A.We assume no one wants to talk about Jesus because that is what TV tells us.
B.We assume no one wants to talk about Jesus because that is what the church tell us.
II.LOST PEOPLE ARE ANNOYING (35-36)
A.Jesus sees lost people with gut-wrenching compassion.
B.Where Jesus felt compassion and saw opportunity we often feel annoyed and see obstacles.
C.Lost people are not annoying in what they do. They are just doing what lost people do.
III.WHAT JESUS SAID (37-38)
A.Jesus says it is not that people don’t want to talk about Jesus but that His people don’t want to talk about Him.
B.People don’t want presentations but do want to have conversations with us about Jesus.
IV.CONVERSATIONS VS PRESENTATIONS
A.Presentations are forgettable. Conversations are memorable.
B.Conversations change lives. Presentations rarely do.
C.Presentations shove info down someone’s throat. Conversations spoon it down alongside stories.
D.Conversations are better because people love to talk, hate to listen.
E.Presentations are concerned with information. Conversations are concerned with people.
